We found a few adorable photos of couples that incorporated their dogs into their wedding day and we just had to share! How cute are those little outfits! • Vows: Traditional or Personalized?

Find Oklahoma wedding officiants in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa areas.

Planning to write your own wedding vows? Whether you’re a traditionalist or a trendsetter, choosing the vows for your wedding day is a romantic and very important task. Oklahoma City’s Rev. Yareni Alvarado can help plan the perfect ceremony with customized nuptials that fit the personality of the bride and groom! Variations of traditional, religious words have been around forever. Some find strength and comfort in reciting them. Do personalized vows sound more meaningful? Ask yourself these questions: What is the single greatest thing about the person you are marrying? What does marriage mean to you? What is your favorite memory of your partner? Whatever your style, wedding vows are unique, loving promises that set the tone for the newlyweds, the perfect opportunity to express your love for one another!

  • Stick With Tradition

Find Oklahoma wedding inspiration in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa areas.

Most of us have all heard “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” as one of the most popular wedding traditions.

What about jumping the broom? In African tradition, jumping the broom is a symbol of sweeping away the old and welcoming the new. It represents a time when the vows of slaves were not legally recognized.

At the end of a Jewish ceremony, the groom smashes a glass with his foot while the guests shout, “Mazel Tov!” Among many interpretations of this custom, most say that the shattered glass is a reminder of the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem.

In many Indian weddings, mehndi, or henna, can be seen on the hands and feet of the bride and groom. Mehndi signifies the strength of love in a marriage. The darker the mehndi color, it is believed, the stronger the love and bond between the couple.

We love the idea of embracing your family’s background and incorporating cultural traditions into your wedding day. It’s a special way to personalize your soiree, following handed-down rituals from around the world. Add some international flair, or just a simple family tie-in, to make your wedding uniquely yours. We'd love to hear from you! What customs or traditions will you include in your upcoming wedding?

  • Bridesmaid Basics

Bridesmaid inspiration, Brides of OklahomaWhether you’re a maid or bride-to-be, you might be wondering – what exactly is expected of a bridesmaid? While it varies from wedding to wedding, bridesmaids are a bride’s support system. From planning and paying for the bridal shower and bachelorette party to keeping track of gifts – and basically just keeping the bride sane – all are a part of the job. We think it’s also a nice touch to get people dancing at the reception. Notice anyone that looks a little shy but is discreetly jammin’ to the song? Drag them on the dance floor and get your groove on! Sometimes, maids will pool their money together and purchase one, over-the-top, fab wedding present for the newlyweds. What couple wouldn’t love that? We want to hear from you, what tasks will you have your ladies in charge of?

Check out all of the cute, glam and super sassy maids with their brides above! Photos from left to right -Top: Kalee Ridings Photography and Candi Coffman Photography. Middle: Shannon Ho Photography and Laske Images. Bottom: Jessica Claire Photography and Zach Seat Photography.

  • Plan the Perfect Getaway

    Michelle's Destinations Unlimited

Thinking about the perfect, romantic getaway? Planning a destination wedding can take a lot of coordination. So, Brides of Oklahoma sat down with destination wedding & honeymoon pro, Michelle, from Michelle's Destinations Unlimited, to get the scoop on need to know information for planning your destination wedding and other tips and tidbits on preparing for your honeymoon!

Q: What 3 things should brides know about planning their perfect destination wedding?

1.) Travel Agent – Find an agent that specializes in destination weddings or the destination you want to go to – they have priceless advice when it comes to figuring out where to stay, tips on what to expect, what to pack, most will coordinate travel for all the guests (so the guests don’t bother you with tons of questions) and will help you bring your wedding ideas to life.

2.) Location – Consider what you want for your wedding location and the wedding ceremony – be flexible on the destination to get what you want for the price you want – for instance, say you’ve always wanted a wedding near a beautiful waterfall. Hawaii! But it costs more than your guests can afford, so you’re torn. I’d suggest going to Ocho Rios, Jamaica – a beautiful destination with waterfalls, costs less than Hawaii and offers all-inclusive resorts!

3.) Photographer – I’ve had some brides consider not getting a professional photographer, I highly recommend having one! Speaking from experience, I got married in the Bahamas, and while we do have a few photos from the wedding coordinator, I really wish I had sprung for the relatively small amount it would have cost to get a real photographer.

Q: Where are the honeymoon hotspots for 2010?

A: Mexico and the Caribbean are always popular for honeymoons. With my clients, the Riviera Maya area south of Cancun and Jamaica have been top spots this year because of the great value you can get – romantic resorts with Ocean views and Jacuzzi tubs!

Q: How do you register your honeymoon?

A: Honeymoon registry is becoming very popular. Couples are able to sign up online through my website or I can set if up for them. This allows the almost married couple to receive gifts and donations as wedding presents for their honeymoon trip! Guests can contact me via phone or email, or go online to make purchases. I have cards that can be put in shower invites and given to the wedding party to help you spread the word, and you get a free wedding website with your registry that you can use to promote your honeymoon registry. Just keep in mind you’ll usually have to pay for the whole trip before you get the money from the registry, so don’t do anything for your honeymoon that you can’t afford to do on your own.

If you're dreaming sunny and warm wishes on this dreary day, contact Michelle to talk about planning your perfect destination wedding or honeymoon. Ciao!

  • Little Surprises

Little Surprises Design, Wedding Event Planner in Oklahoma

Check out the drama and whimsy this table-scape creates, captured beautifully by Joel Jordan Photography. Little Surprises Design, Rebecca Thai, has outdone herself with this enchanting setting. The soft use of romantic lighting from Innovative Event Solutions really emphasizes the dreamy qualities of all the details. The flowing fabrics accent the subtle shimmers from the centerpieces. We just love the individual mini-cakes at each place setting, by Amy Cakes! White with silver beads and floral toppers make the mini-cakes appear absolutely scrumptious!  Rebecca’s invitations, blush with ivory image and lavender wording truly set the tone for this romantic soiree. The bouquet by Oh So Blush, features crystal embellishments, which adds a pop of sparkle to any floral creation. Romantic ruffles cover the chairs, and are absolutely darling! These are a custom creation of Marianne’s Rental for Special Events. The center of the table is an open acrylic box filled with water, crystals and floating peonies. Simply stunning! The setting is unoccupied raw space in downtown Oklahoma City. The combination of the exposed brick and softness of the tabletop elements creates the perfect balance! For more pictures, check it out in Brides of Oklahoma Spring/Summer 2010 issue on page 91!

This week, the spotlight is on Amy Cakes of Norman and No Regrets of Oklahoma City featured in our Paper & Frosting editorial on pages 156 and 157.  We fell in love with this lime and plum palette and it’s truly amazing what they created from the inspiration board we provided.  We gave them complete freedom to create a design that reflected the same look and feel of this board and they certainly exceeded our expectations!  The custom invite is gorgeous with its elegant, damask pattern and we love that it comes folded and wrapped with a silk bow!  What a gift!  And, the subtle shimmer and shine of this lime green cake with oversized plum floral accent is show-stopping. This lovely combo was captured by Tara Lokey Photography.

Stay tuned each week as we share more good stuff and turn the spotlight on other fabulous Oklahoma wedding pros who made the magazine absolutely beautiful!

  • Fall Into Fall With Red, Orange And Yellow

Cake by Oklahoma wedding cake artist Amy Cakes, invitation by RSVP Stationary and More in Oklahoma City, Vera Wang dress available at JJ Kelly Bridal in Oklahoma City and earrings from Nafieh Fine Jewelry in Oklahoma City

If there is one thing we love about fall it’s the rich autumn colors! Fall officially begins in a couple of weeks — it’s been hard, but we’ve finally accepted that summer is over! If you are planning a fall wedding, try hues of deep red, yellow and fiery orange to blend in with the season. Dress your lovely bridesmaids in a red floor-length satin dress like the Vera Wang gown from JJ Kelly Bridal shown above.  Pair the bridesmaids’ dresses with delicate and feminine earrings, like this pair by Chad Allison at Naifeh Fine Jewelry in Oklahoma City.  Also, for that splash of color against your white dress, a bouquet like this from Madeline’s Flower Shop in Oklahoma City in your signature deep, rich tones works perfectly! We absolutely love this cake from Amy Cakes. It portrays an elegantly traditional feel with a hint of flair, intensified by intricately etched leaves to keep up with the fall theme. Kick off your elegant affair with an invite with tangerine accents like this one from RSVP Stationary and More in Oklahoma City. Enjoy the fall season!

  • Perfect Homestead Affair

Wedding plans and design by Cathy Johnson Weddings and cake designed by Amy Cakes

While browsing the online wedding galleries of Oklahoma wedding planner Cathy Johnson, we found a wedding we had to share — only to discover we'd found the wedding of a celebrity from Oklahoma!  The bride, Daphne Bloomer, is an Oklahoma native who moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. She currently plays Eugenia Williams on Days of Our Lives and has had appearances on 24 and Crossing Jordan — way to go Daphne! Back in Oklahoma for her big day, the bride desired a relaxed, comfortable feel. She and her wedding planner, Cathy Johnson, started their grand design ideas with a single green apple. From that apple, grew ideas for the fun and laid-back atmosphere Daphne had dreamed of! Her cute, three-tiered cake was a creation from Amy Cakes. We also had to share the picnic basket cake, candy buffet and tiers of cupcakes — guests definitely weren't lacking in the sweets department! Every detail made this the perfect homestead affair! This beautiful event was captured by Kevin Paul Photography.

  • A Great Monogrammed Gift Idea

The idea to open a store existed long before No Regrets was born! A busy mom with 3 kids and a full time job in pharmaceutical sales, I decided it was time to take the plunge and fulfill a dream of owning my own business. Friends and family frequently asked me to help organize birthdays, anniversaries, showers and other special events; the idea for our store just grew from a love of making sure people had "no regrets" in the party planning process! "No Regrets...from our store to your door" offers exactly the kind of quality merchandise and customer service you can't find anywhere else! • Make Your First Dance Memorable

Surprise your guests with a choreographed routine that’s sure to be a hit at the reception.  Brittany and Derec, featured on pages 79-83 of the Spring/Summer 2009 issue, kept their first dance a huge secret from their friends, family and guests who perhaps expected the first dance to be little more than the standard hug and sway. After a minute of dancing to Brad Paisley’s sentimental ballad “She’s Everything,” these two unexpectedly broke into a carefully choreographed number that combined “every goofy dance we could remember, like Thriller and other silly dances that would make people laugh.”   While this sort of routine may not suit all personalities, a well-choreographed first dance is worth the investment. Wow your guests and share a very special moment with your new hubby with a choreographed dance that will leave your guests captivated. It’s best to work with a professional dance instructor to learn a dance that suits your personal style.  Premier Wedding Dances is a great resource when it comes to choreographed routines! Sheila of Premier Wedding Dances suggests booking your lessons months in advance in order to give yourself plenty of time to rehearse.  However, if you’re just weeks out from your big day, Premier Wedding Dances can still help you pull something together.  Contact Premier Wedding Dances at 405.209.9830.

  • Olive and Copper

We feel in love with this simple, sheath floor-length gown from the Occasions Collection by Jim Hjelm, available locally through Bridal Classiques in Tulsa, and built an entire inspiration board around it.  You can’t go wrong with the richness and crispness of the right shade of green and we love the idea of adding coppery accents.  This 23k gold drop tourmaline pendant necklace – a custom design of Valerie Naifeh with Naifeh Fine Jewelry – is the perfect accessory!  The lush florals are the amazing artistic creation of Rebecca Thai of Oh So Blush Flowers & Gifts in Oklahoma City.  The cake is a creation of Mishelle Handy with Mishelle Handy Cakes in Oklahoma City, and the invite is from the Elum letterpress line, available at The Inviting Place in Tulsa and No Regrets in Oklahoma City.

  • Elum Letterpress Invites

One of the invitation lines that we adore is Elum.  You may have seen them associated with a few of our inspiration boards.  Printed on luxurious pure cotton paper, these letterpress designs offer the ultimate in sophistication with a modern twist.  We were inspired by this particular design – perfect for a quaint, garden wedding.  The designs can be completely customized to fit your personal ink color preferences and font choices as well.  Every piece of the stationery – from invitation, to place card, to dinner menu, and even thank you notes – all coordinate beautifully!  If you love paper and exquisite design, you’ll love Elum.  The invitation line is sold at No Regrets in Oklahoma City and The Inviting Place in Tulsa.  Invite in style!
